the perfect t-shirt

The first of my Capsule Collection series, having polled my audience I tried and tested all of the recommended tees. Here are my findings plus my own rule book for buying t shirts.

Starting this series off with the most simple of items. However, it was the most requested item when I polled on Instagram, here. Finding “your” white t shirt takes some doing. First, you need to be honest about your shape. In my case thats me coming to harsh terms with the fact that no amount of dessert-avoidance will ever give me that Parisian-waif-on-holiday shape. Before we delve into my personal predicaments with tees, let me show you some girls who I think have got it right…

I have boobs (not huge ones but they’re there), I have arms (will never be my favourite feature, but we move), I have a small waist (that if I cover up really does nothing for me, so need to learn to accentuate), I am of average height (average everything to be honest). I am messy so hard to wash fabrics are out. I am clumsy so crease fabrics are out. I will invest on the right thing, within reason. These are the parameters I am dealing with on my t shirt hunt.

As you will see below, I have been brazen enough to create a set of rules for buying and wearing t shirts. Please remember this is an entirely selfish exercise written for me to follow in the hope (as a secondary measure) it helps others too. I have been open about this - I started this series first and foremost to build my own base wardrobe.

The only thing I’d add to the rules above is on fabric - you want cotton, but you also want single yarn cotton in my opinion. This means the “string” (not technical term) is all the same width so the fabric is all one density (like the one above). If you use mixed/multiple/variable yarns, the fabric can appear mottled like this one. This can also mean it moves and stretches unevenly, which we don’t want.

Now we move on to the real stuff - my trying on session, and the top 5 created from it. For video footage of all of this, watch my Instagram here. This list is only for paid subscribers - apologies - but a girls gotta eat (and fund new t shirts).
